Bal Sieber leads a life most people dream about.
Just check out his Instagram account, @modernnerd.co: You’ll see countless photos of him standing in front of beautiful beaches, lush jungles, and roaring waterfalls. As a digital nomad, Bal is a location-independent, fully remote worker — perpetually traveling, sacrificing the comforts of a traditional “home” for experience and personal growth.
After working in software design at consultancies and agencies for years, Bal realized he was losing passion for a career he loved.
“Everything was great but, after a while, it kind of felt a little bit like Groundhog Day. I was starting to go through the motions,” says Bal. While he still wanted to pursue his work, something was missing. “It was a feeling of adventure, a feeling of growth, and being able to explore and experience this planet that we live on.”
Bal made the brave leap into the digital nomad lifestyle several years ago and hasn’t looked back since. Though this way of life is certainly not without its challenges (ask him about the time he spent a month in a capsule hotel in Hong Kong), Bal appreciates the personal growth that comes from being uncomfortable and facing the unknown. It’s also taught him a lot about remote work — something many of us have been thrown into due to COVID-19.
Bal’s top hacks for becoming a remote work pro:
- Make reliable WiFi your top priority
- Treat Slack like your office
- Build a dope mobile workstation
- Find your tribe
Today, Bal is part of the tribe at TheoremOne. After initially helping longtime friend and TheoremOne founder Will Jessup with the company rebrand, both parties realized it was time to “put a ring on it,” as Bal says. In TheoremOne, Bal found a fully remote company where he could continue to have the freedom to travel and contribute to something bigger than himself.
Bal helps run the design department alongside Alex Zapadenko, managing the team and ensuring all projects are following the unique TheoremOne process and market-leading practices. With the help of the cloud, tools like Figma, and a commitment to developing the design department, he seamlessly leads projects from Medellin to Mexico City — or his current quarantine base in Vancouver. “My whole philosophy is life and work, they serve the same purpose, and there is no balance to be achieved,” says Bal.
“We work, we live, we love. It’s all one”
Bal applies this outlook directly to his work at TheoremOne, helping his team solve complex design challenges. One of his latest tips?
“If you’re a talented software designer, engineer, or product manager, you should join TheoremOne — because we’re hiring.”
